v1 The narrative shifts from Saul to David. The Philistines gathered in Aphek, a Philistine city, as they prepare to attack Israel. This tells us that the events in chapter 29 happen before the events of chapter 28 when the Philistines occupied Shunem, a town within the territory of Israel.
v4-5 David was caught in a difficult situation. He had taken refuge under Achish to escape Saul. And now David had to follow Achish into battle against his own people. Even though David had gained Achish’s trust, the other commanders of the Philistines did not trust David. They feared that David would betray them. The commanders were aware of David’s reputation, God protected David.
Instead, God turned the situation around. Just like how God used Abigail to stop David from innocent bloodshed, God used the commanders to take David out of the battle. 1 Corinthians 10:13 reminds us that when we face temptation, God always provides a way out. God helps us when we are caught in difficult situations.
v6-9 Just like the commanders, we are left wondering where David’s true loyalty lies at the moment. Even though Achish trusts David, his perception of David is built entirely upon deception. In 1 Samuel 27, we read that David lied to Achish about attacking Israelite cities. When David calls Achish “my lord the king”, it is unclear whether David is still deceiving Achish or was truly prepared to go to battle against Saul. David’s life was on the line. If he exposed himself, his reputation as a loyal warrior would be shattered.
There are times when you may be faced with a similar situation. Standing up for your faith may come at the cost of your relationship with others or your reputation. In Matthew 10:32-33, Jesus teaches us to stand up for our faith no matter the cost. Jesus calls us not to compromise even when it is difficult.
v10-11 Despite being a mighty warrior, David was sent back from the battle. But as we will see in the next chapter, God had another purpose for sending David back. God moved David out of his area of giftedness to protect Him. At times, you may feel disappointed when life takes an unexpected turn. But even when you struggle to understand why, remember that God has a greater plan. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us to keep trusting God even when things do not make sense.
