1 Samuel 21: God’s mercy never fails

God desires mercy over sacrifice.

David was on the run from King Saul. He fled to Nob, a priestly city, in search of help. David lied to Ahimelech in order to get provisions for his escape. David’s deception show us that even people who are anointed by God are not perfect. They are human and make mistakes too. The unrealistic standard set by the church makes it difficult for leaders to share their hidden struggles. While Godly leaders are held to a higher standard, the church must extend God’s mercy even to leaders.

Ahimelech only had the bread of the Presence from the tabernacle (Exodus 25:30, Leviticus 24:5-9). This bread was considered holy and only the priest were allowed to eat this bread (Leviticus 24:9). Ahimelech prioritised helping David in time of need over keeping the ceremonial law. Jesus highlights Ahimelech’s actions as an example of truly understanding God’s heart (Matthew 12:3-4). Showing mercy to others pleases God more than zealously upholding religious rituals.

What does David’s actions show us about anointed leaders?

In Matthew 12:3-4, Jesus praised Ahimelech’s actions. What does Ahimelech’s actions teach you about God’s heart?

God is faithful when we are faithless.

David had witnessed God’s power at work in his life. But instead of running to God, David ran to his enemies for help. David resorted to acting insane before Achish in order to escape. Despite David’s lack of faith, God continued to protect him. In 2 Timothy 2:13, God promises to remain faithful even in times when we are faithless. God shows us mercy even when we don’t deserve it. Even when we stray far from God, He continues to watch over us.
