Godly friends are faithful.
This chapter shows us the importance of building Godly friendships. Jonathan and David had cut a covenant in 1 Samuel 18. When David was discouraged at Saul’s relentless attempts to kill him, Jonathan stood by his side and offered support. We all need Godly friends to strengthen our faith when we are at the lowest points in our lives. Sometimes all people need is a listening ear to know that they are not alone in their struggle.
v14-17 Godly friends seek the best for each other. Jonathan selflessly supported David’s calling and put it above his own personal ambition. Jonathan acknowledged God’s anointing over David as the future king of Israel. Jonathan feared that David might kill all the members of Saul’s household when he came into power. Since this was a common practice in ancient times. In cutting a covenant with David, Jonathan ensured mercy for his descendants. David honoured this covenant when he showed mercy to Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth, in 2 Samuel 9.
Jonathan and David’s covenant gives us a deeper understanding of God’s covenant with us. In Deuteronomy 7:9, it says that God keeps His covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.

What does this passage teach you about the importance of Godly friendship?
In 2 Samuel 9, David fulfils his covenant to Jonathan. How does verse 14-16 deepen your understanding of being in covenant with God?
God’s friends give spiritual support.
Jonathan was a Godly friend who stood by David’s side. Defending David’s innocence against his father nearly cost Jonathan his life. In David’s lowest moments, Jonathan offered him spiritual support. Before their departure, Jonathan reminded David that in each other’s absence, God will continue to protect them.
God’s protection of our loved ones is a powerful promise. As parents, we may not always be there physically to watch our children. We may worry for our loved ones during times when we are physically separated. But God promises to protect our loved ones in our absence.
You can also give spiritual support to others through words of encouragement, prayer and reminding others of God’s faithfulness.
