v1-5 We have a tendency to put our faith in people instead of God. But how many times have we put our hope in leaders only to be disappointed. Sadly, Samuel’s sons were corrupt even though their father was faithful to God. The people were disappointed and saw how other nations were led by kings. God intended for Israel to be set apart but Israel wanted to be like the world. Instead of following God, they wanted a leader to follow.
v9-18 God gave in to the people’s request for a king. God warned the people of the consequences of having a human king. God wanted the people to see how much better their lives were under His Kingship. But since the people insisted on having a king, God gave in to their request. He allowed them to experience what it was like to be ruled by a king.
v6, v21-22 Samuel must have felt rejected by the nation. But instead of reacting emotionally, Samuel continually went to the Lord. Learn to take your struggles to the Lord. When you bring your troubles before the Lord, He will give you insight and wisdom.
v19-20 The Israelites looked to men for victory instead of God. In 1 Samuel 7, we saw how God led His people to victory over the Philistines. Yet the people wanted to have a human king like the other nations. Sometimes we desire to live like the world because we think it is better. When you feel that way, constantly remind yourself of how you have been blessed with every spiritual gift in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:3).
